It all began when Nikolaus Schmelz laid the foundation for the manufactory in 1936 in Obertshausen, Germany. His son, Günter Schmelz, is part of the company since 1955. He systematically built long-standing and fair partnerships with foreign bag makers, first in Italy, later in Columbia and India. The carefully selected materials, the skilled craftsmanship and the extensive know-how lay the groundwork for the bags. Since 1999 is Thilo Schmelz, grandson of Nikolaus Schmelz, responsible for the fate of the company and leads it steadily towards sustainability. Additionally, to the existing factories abroad, the production in Germany has been resumed three years ago.
